About Responsible Care

Responsible Care® is a global, voluntary initiative developed by the chemical industry to continuously improve its commitment to health, safety, and environmental performance. First launched in Canada in 1985 and now adopted in over 70 countries, Responsible Care aims to foster greater transparency, build public trust, and promote sustainable business practices throughout the chemical value chain.

At its core, Responsible Care encourages companies to go beyond regulatory compliance. It promotes proactive risk management, innovation in product stewardship, and open engagement with stakeholders — including governments, communities, and customers. Companies that adopt Responsible Care commit to measurable performance indicators and undergo regular assessments to ensure continual progress.

Through the implementation of Responsible Care, chemical companies contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as climate action, clean water, and responsible consumption and production. This initiative is not only a code of conduct but also a business strategy that drives ethical operations, enhances corporate reputation, and supports long-term competitiveness.

Responsible Care is coordinated globally by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA) and implemented locally by national associations such as Responsible Care Indonesia (RCI). It represents the collective effort of the industry to operate safely, sustainably, and responsibly — for people, for the environment, and for future generations.
